Saw it last night in Riga, Latvia (of all places). Now, safe back in london, I'm still recovering. We were the only people in the cinema and when it moved from the psychic savagery of the therapeutic misalliance into the physical dimension, I had to persuade my wife that staying in the cinema was psychically safer than leaving i.e. we, too, had to walk through the horror... or leave with it. We had to trust Lars Van Trier was a serious man with serious intentions. At this time I feel that anything I said about the meaning of the film would be reductive and premature. Like you, the accusations of misogyny seemed ludicrous... a disingenuous attempt to defuse the film. Certainly, the film is still working for me... Sometimes its satisfying to be able to sit with the not-knowing in the knowledge that more will be revealed. He may have even persuaded me to take a less impatient look at Tarkovsky's "Stalker"

Thanks! I did find silly reviews (pure resistance to the film, of course) but also some good ones. The funniest ones were, by far, the ones making a critique while confessing they hadn't seem the film. It is just that kind of movie, isn't it?

Excellent stuff! There's been so much tosh written about this film that it's very refreshing to see such an intelligent analysis.
